About Redo Health Balmain

Welcome to Redo Health Balmain! Our goal is to help you return to optimal function, as quickly as possible! Our solution lies in our whole-body assessment approach. We don't just treat symptoms; we look for the underlying cause of your pain or injury.

We have a four-step plan that helps us achieve fantastic results.

  1. Assessment: we have a thorough process, whereby we ask a lot of questions and get a good understanding of your history. This helps us understand the 'why' of your injury. We also will include an examination of movement and performance tasks, allowing us to see your current limitations and problems.

  2. Answering the 'why': Following the assessment, we collate all that information and using our knowledge, determine the underlying cause. What is the driver behind your pain or injury?

  3. Plan: Now we know what the problem is, now we need to plan the treatment process.

  4. Rehabilitation: Now, we begin fixing it. Your treatment program is specifically designed around your problem, and our team will now help you implement it!

Q&A with Brendan McGovern

What made you decide to become a physiotherapist?

At a young age I had an interest in working with and helping others and interest in human movement. Over the years my interest and amazement in that the human body is capable of had continued to evolve.

What do you love most about your job?

I love helping people getting back to doing what they love - from the simple day to day activities to exercise and performance based goals. The human body is both amazing and complex and its ability to change continues to amaze me!

Why should a new patient decide to choose you?

I love what I do and am always working on improving my skills and what I can offer my patients through ongoing learning and education. Having dealt firsthand with several injuries over the years, I can appreciate the struggles my patients are dealing with and am invested in helping them achieve their goals.

What do you enjoy doing when you're not working?

When I am not working I enjoy moving myself - training at the gym, yoga, cycling, walking my 2 dogs - Rocket and Caesar. I am an avid reader - of both fiction and non-fiction, I love to travel (including visiting my family back in Canada) and I always enjoy a good movie!

What do you enjoy about Balmain and the community?

Balmain has such a great sense of community. I love watching how my patients that come to classes end up socialising outside of class (coffee before or after class) and how over the years I have been able to meet so many local great people who continue to support my small practice.

Find us online

Physio Balmain is (from our research) one of the most common searches our patient's use to find us, followed by Physiotherapist Balmain and interestingly, Physiotherapy Balmain. Patients often search us by suburb first, however, and as a result, some other typical searches include Balmain Physio, Balmain Physiotherapist and or Balmain Physiotherapy. Though not a direct variation to the two above, a broader approach is often taken with a search like; physio near me, or if a practice is more intended then physiotherapy near me is quite often the search. We have found that depending on the demographics the use of the word 'in' features quite heavily, and so we'll often see Physio in Balmain, Physiotherapist in Balmain and Physiotherapy in Balmain as common phrases. In the end, we do our best to be as visible and accessible for our patients in and around our local area as possible.

Balmain profile

Balmain is a vibrant suburb located in the Inner West of Sydney, New South Wales. It is located just 2 kilometres from the Sydney CBD and is under the Inner West Council local government area. The suburb is situated in the Balmain Peninsula and is bordered by the Drummoyne, Birchgrove, Rozelle and Balmain East suburbs.

Balmain has a total land area of 1.5 km2 and is home to 10,453 residents, based on the 2016 census.

History of Balmain

Before the European settlement, the early inhabitants of Balmain were Aboriginal Australians, Gadigal and Wangal people.

In 1800, Governor John Hunter granted a 550-acre land, which included Balmain, to Scottish-born naval surgeon and civil administrator Dr William Balmain. After a year, Balmain transferred his entire holding to John Borthwick Gilchrist before returning to his hometown. The descendants of Balmain eventually challenged the legality of the transfer, which put the development of the area into a halt. The suburb subsequently became known as Gilchrist's place; however, official court documents referred to it as Balmain Estate.

During the long years of legal challenges, the area was leased for farming and cattle rearing. It was in 1833 when Gilchrist transferred power of attorney to Frederick Parbury who commissioned for the site to be subdivided. The following years, Balmain was developed, and its population grew.

The peninsula became one of the major industrial centres of Sydney with industries like shipbuilding and engineering paving way for further development of Balmain. A coal mine was also opened in the area in the late 1890s. In 1891, the Australian Labor Party was formed in Balmain.

A railway that was established in Balmain during the 1920s opened the area to more rough working-class families to reside in the suburb. An influx of immigrants also increased the suburb's population in the 1950s. The following decade, the gentrification of Balmain began as industries dwindled in the area.

Balmain is now a laid-back community that successfully retained its heritage linked to its industrial past.
