Glebe is Sydney’s inner-western suburb that is covered under the local government area of the City of Sydney. The suburbs bordering Glebe include Annandale, Pyrmont, Forest Lodge, Ultimo, Broadway, Camperdown, and Chippendale.
The suburb is situated 3 km southwest of the Sydney CBD and is enclosed by Rozelle Bay and Blackwattle Bay, along with Sydney Harbour towards the north. To the west of Glebe lie the suburbs of Forest Lodge and Annandale, and towards the east is the Ultimo suburb. The southern side is bordered by Broadway and Parramatta Road.
As of 2016, the suburb recorded a total of 11,532 inhabitants, of which 54.7% were Australian-born. Next, about 17.3% were Catholics, and 43% had no religion.
History of Glebe
The suburb derived its name from the fact that it was initially a glebe, a piece of land owned by the Anglican Church. Glebe became home to Edmund Blacket, a famous Australian architect, in the 19th century.
Facilities
Rozelle Tram Depot is a significant landmark of Glebe and is the largest one in Sydney. At present, it comprises six historic trams. The operations of the depot ceased on 22 November 1958.
Glebe Point Road is a major road in the suburb, which is lined by cafes, specialty shops, and ethnic restaurants having cuisines around the globe, including Indian, Italian, Thai, Dutch-Indonesian, and others.
Broadway Shopping Centre features a 12-screen cinema complex, a 500-seat Food Court, and many other significant retailers.
