The suburb got its name from Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney of St. Leonards. Initially, the name specified the entire area. In 1890, the oldest railway station opened, thereby improving the connectivity of the region with other places. The Gore Hill Cemetery was the primary burial site of this area which closed in 1975. However, the site has now got a heritage status.
