History of Burleigh Heads

Indigenous inhabitants in Australia have been known to live in Burleigh Heads for several thousand years before the Europeans settled in the region. The given indigenous tribe in the local region was given the name of Kombumerri clan. The clan was responsible for naming the given area as Jellurgal.

In the year 1840, someone named James Warner was given the responsibility of surveying the coastline situated close to the Moreton Bay. Warner went on to call the area as Burly Head due to its gigantic appearance. Later on, the spelling was changed to Burleigh.
