Mermaid Waters
Mermaid Waters is a suburb on the Gold Coast. It’s located 6.8 kilometres south of Surfers Paradise and is currently home to about 12,045 people (based on the 2016 Census). The suburb has a total land area of 7.1 km2, and it belongs to the local government area of Gold Coast City. Mermaid Waters is surrounded by the suburbs of Clear Island Waters, Broadbeach Waters, Broadbeach, Robina, Miami, and Burleigh Waters.
A mostly residential suburb, Mermaid Waters feature homes built along artificial lakes and canals. You can easily reach Mermaid Waters waters by bus as it’s serviced by three major public bus routes ( 756, 750, and 757). The nearest rail in Mermaid Waters is in the neighbouring suburb of Robina (Robina Railway Station).
History of Mermaid Waters
Mermaid Waters got its name from a cutter ship. HMS Mermaid was brought by John Oxley - who is an Australian surveyor - to the area in 1823, calling the beach where he landed as Mermaid beach. Eventually, the adjacent land to the west of Mermaid beach became known as Mermaid Waters.
Facilities in Mermaid Waters
Most commercial activities in Mermaid Waters is centred in two small local shopping centres, one medium-sized shopping centre, and the Q Super Centre. If you are looking for a more prominent shopping district, head right to the neighbouring suburb of Broadbeach Waters. There you can find the Pacific Fair Shopping Centre, which is one of the largest in Gold Coast.
Education facilities in or around the suburb included the Miami State School which is owned by the government. The primary school has a special education program and a community hall for gatherings and social events. High school education in the suburb is provided by the Merrimac State High School, also owned by the government.
At the north of the suburb is the Albert Waterways Community Hall. And beside it is the Broadbeach Library which is located inside Mermaid Waters despite it being named after the neighbouring suburb of Broadbeach Waters.
For sporting events, the Pizzey Park Sports Complex is the place to go. The facility hosts various clubs and sports in Gold Coast. Just next to it is the Miami Olympic Swimming Pool.
