Find us online

Physio Alexandria is (from our research) one of the most common searches our patient's use to find us, followed by Physiotherapist Alexandria and interestingly, Physiotherapy Alexandria. Patients often search us by suburb first, however, and as a result, some other typical searches include Alexandria Physio, Alexandria Physiotherapist and or Alexandria Physiotherapy. Though not a direct variation to the two above, a broader approach is often taken with a search like; physio near me, or if a practice is more intended then physiotherapy near me is quite often the search. We have found that depending on the demographics the use of the word 'in' features quite heavily, and so we'll often see Physio in Alexandria, Physiotherapist in Alexandria and Physiotherapy in Alexandria as common phrases. In the end, we do our best to be as visible and accessible for our patients in and around our local area as possible.

Alexandria profile

Just four kilometres south of the CBD, Alexandria is an inner-city suburb of Sydney, New South Wales. Alexandria has a total land area of 3.8km2 and is home to 8,262 residents, according to the 2016 census. It is under the local government area of the City of Sydney and bordered by the suburbs: Erskineville, Eveleigh, Redfern, Newtown, Zetland, St. Peters, Mascot and Green Square.

History of Alexandria

Alexandria was named in commemoration of the British Empire’s victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Alexandria. The area was declared a municipality in 1868 after Alexandria was separated from Waterloo.

Developments in Alexandria continued up to the late 1920s, and by 1948, the municipality became the largest industrial district in the country and was called “The Birmingham of Australia”. At that time, 550 factories operated in Alexandria, where products such as bricks to aeroplanes were manufactured.

In 1949, the municipality was abolished upon Alexandria’s merger into the City of Sydney. In 1968, Alexandria became part of another new municipality, South Sydney Council and was brought back to the City of Sydney in 1982 (separated again in 1988). Finally, in 2004, Alexandria also became part of the City of Sydney when it merged with the City of South Sydney.

Facilities Around Alexandria

Alexandria remains today as a primarily industrial suburb with pockets of quiet residential areas.

Numerous food establishments and cafes that serve sumptuous dishes and coffee are found around the suburb. Some of the popular among locals is the Grounds of Alexandria, Bourke Street Bakery, Cipro and Cafe Sopra. The Alexandria Hotel is a historic pub and a favourite hangout spot of Sydney Swans fans.

Considering its proximity to the CBD, Alexandria has lovely parks for residents who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a quiet time outdoors. The Alexandria Park, for example, features various recreational facilities, a sports field, an enclosed playground and off-leash areas for dogs.

The northeast side of the suburb is part of the Green Square district which is currently undergoing gentrification. Construction of modern retail, business and residential establishments are underway.

Alexandria is a suburb ideal for families with children as there are a number of schools in the area, such as Wunanbiri Preschool, Alexandria Park Community School Senior Campus and Central Sydney Intensive English High School.

Commuting is as easy as walking to the commercial areas in the suburb or to the three major train stations around Alexandria. There are also plenty of buses that service the suburb, and it is just a few minutes away from the Sydney airport.
