Q&A with Marilie Birkett

What made you decide to become a physiotherapist?

Having had my own injuries in the past, I saw a physiotherapist regularly and became fascinated with the body and helping poeple become the best version of themselves. I'm passionate about holistic health and helping the physical body is just one aspect of that.

What do you love most about your job?

What I love the most is that I get to meet and help people from all aspects of life. Not one person is ever the same and I love getting to understand a person's whole story and how that influences their injuries.

Why should a new patient decide to choose you?

I am a friendly and very understanding physio and will do my absolute best to help you manage and deal with your injury that best suits to your lifestyle and needs. I understand that everyone has their own pace and challenges in life and will work with you to best manage your injury in a holistic way.

What do you enjoy doing when you're not working?

When I'm not working I enjoy exercising daily, whether that's in the gym, outside or Pilates. I also enjoy painting, swimming or body-boarding at the beach or paddleboarding with friends. My husband and I also like to have at least one adventure/exploring day during the week.

What do you enjoy about Mascot and the community?

Although there are a lot of high rise buildings, there is still a great sense of "down to earth" about it. If you go for a little walk around there are actually a lot of amazing trees, friendly people and so many cafe's and coffee spots! It's a friendly community around us and that's what makes it so great!

Q&A with James Konstantakopoulos

What made you decide to become a physiotherapist?

I've always wanted to work with musculoskeletal conditions and injuries, and have a real passion for allowing people to understand their injuries/concerns and achieve their goals. I have an understanding and empathetic nature, so I thought physiotherapy was a perfect fit.

What do you love most about your job?

I love having the ability to teach and educate people, as well as empowering them to be active in their rehabilitation and recovery. As a physiotherapist, we see so many different conditions and injuries; therefore, the day is never dull, and we're always problem-solving, which is what I love.

Why should a new patient decide to choose you?

I am an experienced physiotherapist who has a very caring and calming nature. I am very descriptive and always ensure the patient understands what's going on. I've got great banter and love my sport, so if you're a fan, we'll get along just fine.

What do you enjoy doing when you're not working?

When I'm not working and treating patients, I enjoy catching up with friends, playing basketball and cricket and spending time with my family. Oh, and you'll find me watching Seinfeld marathons all year long.

What do you enjoy about Mascot and the community?

Mascot is a great area with a variety of people; there are a lot of different offices and occupations, which always makes getting to know our patients very interesting. The cafes are incredible. If you love coffee, you're in the right place.

Find us online

Physio Mascot is (from our research) one of the most common searches our patient's use to find us, followed by Physiotherapist Mascot and interestingly, Physiotherapy Mascot. Patients often search us by suburb first, however, and as a result, some other typical searches include Mascot Physio, Mascot Physiotherapist and or Mascot Physiotherapy. Though not a direct variation to the two above, a broader approach is often taken with a search like; physio near me, or if a practice is more intended then physiotherapy near me is quite often the search. We have found that depending on the demographics the use of the word 'in' features quite heavily, and so we'll often see Physio in Mascot, Physiotherapist in Mascot and Physiotherapy in Mascot as common phrases. In the end, we do our best to be as visible and accessible for our patients in and around our local area as possible.

Mascot profile

Located in the Inner-South of Sydney, Mascot is a suburb just 7 kilometres away from the Sydney CBD. Mascot is one of the administrative centres of the Bay Side Council, while a small part of it is located in the Inner West Council. History of Mascot

The first grants in Mascot were made in 1835, where the suburb’s lands were mostly used for market gardening. Following the construction of Botany Road in 1875, the suburb was subdivided and a municipality called “North Botany” was established in 1888. In 1904, a racecourse known as “Ascot” operated in the area. It was named after a famous counterpart in England. A few years after (1911), a referendum was held to name the suburb as Ascot or Booralee. However, an objection from the postal authorities on the use of “Ascot”, which led to the council to name the suburb as Mascot. The suburb was then chosen in 1920 to be a site of a public airfield with the Commonwealth Government purchasing 161 acres of land in Mascot for this purpose. The said airfield began operating in 1924.
