Established in 1840, Unley is located in the inner southern districts of the city of Adelaide, South Australia. This cosmopolitan suburb has a total population of 4, 004 according to the 2016 census. Its neighbouring suburbs are Wayville, Parkside, Malvern, Adelaide Park Lands, Hyde Park and Fullarton. Unley is bounded by the Greenhill road in the North and Opey Avenue in the south. In the west, the suburb is bordered by King William Road. And in the east, by the roads Unley, Maud, and Windsor. Unley houses the Sturt Football Club of the South Australian National Football League (SANFL).
The aboriginal people of the Kaurna Tribe were known to be the first inhabitants of Unley. These people were driven away by the arrival of European migrants in the mid-19th century. The area around Unley was particularly attractive for these settlers because of its rich natural resources. These early settlers include people from the United Kingdom of Great Britain, Ireland, and few German-speaking countries.
What used to be a good farming region eventually became a bustling commercial hub as the people cleared forests, vineyards, and orchards to make way for various commercial establishments. The farming industry which Unley was famous for is gone and you can rarely see sheep and cattle farms anymore.
Around 1857, the region was finally recognised as Unley — which comes from the family name of Thomas Whistler’s wife. Thomas and his kin were the first owners of the land. The first post office in the area opened on 17 January 1850.
Some of the notable residents of Unley include John Lorenzo Young who is the founder of the Adelaide Education Institution and Seth Ferry who is a prominent dealer of horses in the state.
Being a sports-oriented suburb, Unley has a stadium which caters for the needs of several sports like soccer, cricket, football, track and field, and many more. Eventually, the oval became a multi-use sporting ground for various events in the suburbs and its surrounds. You can also find various shopping districts and parks in the suburb.
