History of Sutherland

The naming of Sutherland has two theories behind it. First, it is taken from Forby Sutherland, an able seaman who dies on Captain Cook's Endeavour voyage. Second, Thomas Mitchell, south-eastern Australia's surveyor and explorer named the first parish as the "Parish of Southerland".

In the 1860s, Thomas Holt purchased 13,000 acres stretching from Sutherland to Cronulla. The first road of the suburb was South Road, which was constructed in 1842.
