The suburb was initially named as Cabbage Tree Creek by the British settlers. The early inhabitants of Sandgate are the Turrbul people, who spread across the creeks, the seashore, and the lagoons from Nudgee Beach down to the Pine River. The land of this suburb was first made available in 1853.
