Q&A with Hubert Huynh

What made you decide to become a physiotherapist?

Being a physiotherapist allows me to positively affect the community I work in through improving people's health and understanding of their health. I decided to become a physio through my interest in the human body and my background in sports however as I studied further, I have loved learning the different fields that physiotherapists are involved in which makes it exciting.

What do you love most about your job?

Seeing the improvement in an individual's pain, function and ultimately them achieving their goal. I love being part of this journey of learning, exploration, grit and success. I love how varied my job can be with learning about the physical aspects of injury but also the motivational side of recovering from pain, injury and illnesses.

Why should a new patient decide to choose you?

I am not just passionate about being a physiotherapist but first and foremost, care about you. I take the time to listen to your concerns and work collaboratively with you in your recovery so that you are understand what is going on and what your recovery looks like. I am highly trained through my post-graduate masters so that you can assured that I am providing most up-to-date and effective treatment of you condition. Finally, I believe that your session doesn't end after you leave the clinic and will follow-up/ guide you through your recovery with individualised exercise rehabilitation.

What do you enjoy doing when you're not working?

I recharge in nature and love to be hiking and trekking in the mountains. I have been active all my life and love to play various sports including tennis, dragon-boat paddling, soccer and currently training at my local CrossFit gym. I'm also currently having a go at learning the saxophone.

What do you enjoy about Oatley and the community?

I grew up in the St. George area going to school at Sydney Tech High and love the diverse, family-orientated community that I work in at Oatley. I like the green spaces in the area where you'll find me frequently walking the trails in the area and Oatley Park. The community is very active which I love to see everyone out exercising and and enjoying the outdoors!

Find us online

Physio Oatley is (from our research) one of the most common searches our patient's use to find us, followed by Physiotherapist Oatley and interestingly, Physiotherapy Oatley. Patients often search us by suburb first, however, and as a result, some other typical searches include Oatley Physio, Oatley Physiotherapist and or Oatley Physiotherapy. Though not a direct variation to the two above, a broader approach is often taken with a search like; physio near me, or if a practice is more intended then physiotherapy near me is quite often the search. We have found that depending on the demographics the use of the word 'in' features quite heavily, and so we'll often see Physio in Oatley, Physiotherapist in Oatley and Physiotherapy in Oatley as common phrases. In the end, we do our best to be as visible and accessible for our patients in and around our local area as possible.

Oatley profile

Oatley is a suburb in Southern Sydney, located 18 kilometres from the Sydney CBD. It is part of the St. George area and is under the Georges River Council. Based on the 2016 census, Oatley has 10,486 residents.

Several bodies of water are found in Oatley, such as the Georges River, Oatley Bay, Lime Kiln Bay, and the Neverfail Bay. While the suburbs neighbouring Oatley are; Mortdale, Penshurst, Hurstville Grove, Peakhurst Heights, Connells Point, Lugarno, Como and Oyster Bay.

History of Oatley

Oatley was named after James Oatley Snr, a watch-maker and one-time convict who was transported to Botany Bay in 1814 for a life sentence. Oatley, however, was granted a conditional pardon in 1821 and received several land grants, including areas near the Georges River.

The estate remained with the Oatley family until it was acquired in 1881, where a subdivision plan was issued shortly after. A railway was opened in 1886; however, the area remained isolated for a long time as it was considered too remote. The location was officially named as Oatley in 1903 when a post office was established in the suburb.

It was also in the early 1900s when facilities started to open in Oatley, such as a combined post and telephone office, railway station, churches, shops and the Oatley School of Arts Hall, which was the meeting place for residents at that time.

The main commercial area in the suburb is located along Oatley Avenue and Frederick Street, near the railway station. Major supermarkets, restaurants and cafés are also found across the suburb.
