Newcastle is the 2nd most populated area in NSW. This is the hub of the Greater Newcastle area that includes parts of government areas like the City of Maitland, City of Cessnock, City of Newcastle, and the City of Lake Macquarie. This is a prominent city in the Hunter region and is primarily known for its coal. Newcastle is also known as the largest coal exporting harbour of the world.
Till 1822, Newcastle was a penal settlement as farming started in the region. Being a penal colony, here, military rule was quite harsh. Newcastle remained an important industrial centre during World War II. Over the years, Newcastle went through several developmental changes. It also faced several natural calamities like earthquakes and storms. Today, it is one of the most developing NSW cities and visited by thousands of people across the globe.
There are many parks in Newcastle which include King Edward Park that was designated in 1863. This park is best known for its splendid coastal views, a sunken garden and a Victorian rotunda. Besides this, the city holds many festivals and cultural events throughout the year. The Mattara festival is known as the official festival of this city. It is like a ‘country fair’ program, an amalgamation of sporting events, rides, parade, and band competitions. The Newcastle Jazz festival is held annually, and it generally runs for three days in August. The festival draws performers from all over Australia.
Newcastle, like any other metropolitan area, has extensive road links. Buses and taxis cover most areas and help to link the city to other parts of the city. Rail transport is also available for easy commuting. The Newcastle Airport is also situated nearby and around 15 km on the north of Newcastle CBD.
