History of Newcastle

Till 1822, Newcastle was a penal settlement as farming started in the region. Being a penal colony, here, military rule was quite harsh. Newcastle remained an important industrial centre during World War II. Over the years, Newcastle went through several developmental changes. It also faced several natural calamities like earthquakes and storms. Today, it is one of the most developing NSW cities and visited by thousands of people across the globe.

There are many parks in Newcastle which include King Edward Park that was designated in 1863. This park is best known for its splendid coastal views, a sunken garden and a Victorian rotunda. Besides this, the city holds many festivals and cultural events throughout the year. The Mattara festival is known as the official festival of this city. It is like a ‘country fair’ program, an amalgamation of sporting events, rides, parade, and band competitions.
