History of Marrickville

The suburb gets its name from the ‘Marrick’ estate which was subdivided in 1855. This estate was centrally located, right at the intersection of Chapel Street and Victoria Road. The suburb underwent a lot of changes over the years, and in 1861, it became a municipality. Much later in 1948, it merged with other cities of Petersham and St Peters to form Marrickville Municipal Council. The first school in the region opened in 1864.
