Langwarrin is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, located 42 kilometres south-east of the Melbourne CBD. The suburb is under the local government area of Frankston City and has a population of 22,588 as of the 2016 census.

The total land area of the suburb is 23.7km2. The suburbs that border it: Frankston North, Skye, Cranbourne West, Frankston, Cranbourne South, Frankston South, Langwarrin South and Pearcedale.

History of Langwarrin

Langwarrin was named after the Langwarrin parish, which got its name from Lang Waring pastoral run that extended from the suburb up to the township of Tyabb.

In 1886, The Langwarrin Military Reserve was established in the area as the elevated location was deemed strategic for the defence of Phillip Bay and Melbourne from seaborne attack. Three years after, the Langwarrin Railway Station was opened followed by the opening of two post offices.

In World War I, the military reserve served as detention for prisoners of war. An army hospital was also established in this area for combatants with venereal disease. While in World War II, the reserve became a training ground for the military up until it was leased and then sold to the State Government.

The main commercial area in Langwarrin is along the Cranbourne-Frankston road. Along this road are the two main shopping centres in the suburb, which are the Gateway Shopping Village (which has a Coles supermarket, Target and a dozen speciality stores) and the Langwarrin Plaza Shopping Centre (which has a Woolworth's supermarket). Also located in this area is the Langwarrin Sports Medicine Centre and a pharmacy.

There are several outdoor facilities and recreation facilities in the suburb, like the Langwarrin Skatepark, Lloyd Park and McClelland Gallery. There's also the Bretta's Langwarrin Hotel, which has a popular restaurant and a massive multi-level indoor playground.

This is a former military facility that was transformed into a reserve for the conservation of indigenous flora and fauna. Along the walking trails, visitors will find rich vegetation with over 300 local flora.

The reserve also serves as an excellent habitat for small mammals such as the endangered Southern Brown Bandicoot and the New Holland Mouse. Almost 100 bird species, including the rare Southern Emu-wren, have also been sighted in this area.
