Find us online

Physio Kiama is (from our research) one of the most common searches our patient's use to find us, followed by Physiotherapist Kiama and interestingly, Physiotherapy Kiama. Patients often search us by suburb first, however, and as a result, some other typical searches include Kiama Physio, Kiama Physiotherapist and or Kiama Physiotherapy. Though not a direct variation to the two above, a broader approach is often taken with a search like; physio near me, or if a practice is more intended then physiotherapy near me is quite often the search. We have found that depending on the demographics the use of the word 'in' features quite heavily, and so we'll often see Physio in Kiama, Physiotherapist in Kiama and Physiotherapy in Kiama as common phrases. In the end, we do our best to be as visible and accessible for our patients in and around our local area as possible.

Kiama profile

Kiama is a coastal town located in Illawarra, New South Wales 120 kilometres south of Sydney, making it a popular destination for day-trippers and weekenders from the capital city. It has a total land area of 13.9km2 and is home to 7,700 people based on the 2016 census.

Kiama is under the local government area of the Municipality of Kiama and is bordered by the Jamberoo and Jerrara villages, Kiama Heights and the suburb of Bombo.

History of Kiama

Prior to the arrival of the cedar-getters in 1810, the original inhabitants of Kiama were the Wodi Wodi indigenous group. In fact, the suburb’s name was derived from the Wodi Wodi indigenous word “Kiaram-a”, which means “where the sea makes a noise”.

During the early years of settlement in Australia, the area was utilised for wheat farming as the soil in Kiama was volcanic and the town had frequent rains compared to other areas in the country. However, when wheat failed to grow in Kiama, farmers turned to dairying. Kiama is actually recognised as one of the birthplaces of Australia’s dairy industry. The first Dairy Factory and first Dairy Cooperative in Australia were found here.

Following the settlement, Kiama experienced another population boom in the early 20th century due to the quarries that opened in the town. Until today, a few quarries still operate in Kiama, such as the NSW Railway Quarry.

Sea trade also flourished in Kiama with ships carrying blue metal stone from the town to Sydney. Over time, the city became a popular summer tourist spot and has turned Kiama into a dormitory suburb (where people travelled away to work).

Facilities Around Kiama

There are plenty of things to keep locals and visitors busy in Kiama. As a coastal town, Kiama offers numerous beaches (like Boyds Beach, Surf Beach - Kiama, Easts Beach and Kendalls Beac) that offer a large range of surfing conditions. Popular surfing competitions are held here yearly.

In Terralong Street, there is a strip of cafes, restaurants, boutique stores and art galleries. A shopping centre and the town’s historic war memorial and fire station are also located in this street.

Several schools are located in Kiama, like the Kiama High School, SS. Peter and Paul Catholic School and vocational education and training providers, Kiama Community College and National Training Masters.

Kiama is connected to Sydney by the Kiama railway station on the Illawarra railway line. Within the town, there are a number of local public transport services such as the Kiama Coachlines, Premier Illawarra buses, Kiama Cabs and Cityrail.
