Q&A with Jesse Newman

What made you decide to become a physiotherapist?

The opportunity to provide immediate and observable improvements for people, helping alleviate pain and improve quality of life. The enduring nature of these changes is also most rewarding. I had already developed an interest in movement-based therapy while in the Army, so this seemed a logical progression.

What do you love most about your job?

After the first few years when you are absorbed by what is immediately in front of you, you start to look for the challenges, and you realise that every person has another layer of complication. The ability to take a deep dive into what on a first pass may seem trivial or minor to find an underlying long term issue, and helping a client resolve that, is very rewarding. You know there will be long term benefits.

Why should a new patient decide to choose you?

If they have tried other approaches and found them not entirely helpful, then it may be time to dig deeper into the issue, metaphorically and literally. Also, I am prepared to work as hard as required and as much as can be tolerated, to achieve an outcome as soon as possible - earlier resolutions are better for both myself and the patient.

What do you enjoy doing when you're not working?

Working in both the clinic and with the Army occupies a large chunk of my week, so I like to spend my spare time with my family. My other pursuits include hockey (which is also a family sport - so a 'two birds' situation), snowboarding when I can and reading.

What do you enjoy about Fremantle and the community?

Fremantle is a lovely old town, with plenty of character and charm. The locals are diverse and eclectic, and being a small city, it is hard to walk down a street without running into someone you know. I think it is very community focused.

Q&A with Martin Uren

What made you decide to become a physiotherapist?

I had been to Physiotherapists as a patient and appreciated the things they had done for me. I wanted to be of assistance to people in the same way. I made the right decision and have never looked back!

What do you love most about your job?

I enjoy the variety of people I meet and help. As I continue to practice I enjoy the problem solving aspect of the job, working out the root causes of pain and helping patients gain a sense of control over the issues they see me for. As cliché as it sounds, helping people is a big positive about my job.

Why should a new patient decide to choose you?

A new patient should choose me because of my years of experience and variety of working experiences. I have worked with all ages and a wide variety of conditions. I realise that my patients spend very little time with me and a lot of time doing other things, so I help my patients understand what they can do for themselves.

What do you enjoy doing when you're not working?

When I'm not working I like to spend time with my kids. I love summer because my kids and I love the beach. I try to get to the gym a few times a week and go to the footy when I can. Other than that I'm just a dad like many others.

What do you enjoy about Fremantle and the community?

I enjoy working in Fremantle because of the people who are here. You may fine me enjoying some of the coffee places/restaurants/pubs just down the road on the weekends as well!

Find us online

Physio Fremantle is (from our research) one of the most common searches our patient's use to find us, followed by Physiotherapist Fremantle and interestingly, Physiotherapy Fremantle. Patients often search us by suburb first, however, and as a result, some other typical searches include Fremantle Physio, Fremantle Physiotherapist and or Fremantle Physiotherapy. Though not a direct variation to the two above, a broader approach is often taken with a search like; physio near me, or if a practice is more intended then physiotherapy near me is quite often the search. We have found that depending on the demographics the use of the word 'in' features quite heavily, and so we'll often see Physio in Fremantle, Physiotherapist in Fremantle and Physiotherapy in Fremantle as common phrases. In the end, we do our best to be as visible and accessible for our patients in and around our local area as possible.

Fremantle profile

Fremantle is a city and a principal port of West Australia (WA). It is located in the Indian Ocean at the mouth of the Swan River in the metropolitan area of WA’s state capital, Perth. With a total land area of 19 km2, Fremantle is home to 28,893 residents based on the 2016 census.

History of Fremantle

The city was established in 1829 and was named after Capt. Sir Charles Fremantle, a British naval officer who took over the area and prevented the French and American invasion. Prior to British settlement, Fremantle’s first inhabitants were the Noongar people who called the area “Walyalup”, which means “place of the woylie”.

The port was charted as a municipality in 1883 and became a top major whaling centre with progress and harbour improvements happening during the late 19th century. It was also at this time when Fremantle became capital of trade and gateway to gold miners during the Western Australian gold rush.

Facilities Around Fremantle

Today, Fremantle is a bustling industrial centre that manufactures products such as refined sugar, superphosphate fertiliser, steel, cement and aluminium. Besides being a central port area, Fremantle is the terminus of the Trans-Australian Railway that links the city to WA’s primary agricultural sites.

Over the years, Fremantle also transformed into a cultural and tourist destination. There are four beautiful swimming beaches in the city, where various water sports activities (parasailing, kite surfing, etc.) are offered.

There are also diverse restaurants throughout the port city, offering cuisines from all over the globe. South Terrace, or better known as The Cappuccino Strip, features a mix of cafes, restaurants and pubs and has some of the best Italian restaurants in the state. This is home to the famous Fremantle Markets and the Sail & Anchor Hotel.

Fremantle also has thriving music, theatre and dance scene with the city filled with street performers and multiple art galleries.

There are plenty of educational facilities in this region such as the Fremantle Primary School, Lance Holt School, Christian Brothers’ College and the historic University of Notre Dame Australia.
