History of Applecross

Applecross was named after a peninsula in Scotland, also being named after the streets from the Scottish Peninsula. The land was initially granted to Lionel Lukin in 1830 but was acquired by Alexander Matheson in 1896. It was Matheson who developed and named the subdivision of Applecross.

During World War II, Applecross became the location of a “Patriotic Grand Prix” where the suburb’s streets were used for a car race dubbed “Round-the-houses” race.
